try shu uemera's pewter and moss green shades for smoky kinda look...theyre not as dark as black but guarantees you the same intensity...

If you have Sephora anywhere near you, go and splurge on Too Faced's (that sounds wrong) smokey eye pallet. It gives you three types of smokey eyes that you can do. A day-appropriate one as well. THere are cards in which will tell you where to put the shadow in
PS: If you're working with dark colors, you might wanna soften the hold on your brush and do soft strokes rather than packing the color on your lids. Building up the color is so much easier than packing it on and blending it out to make it less... mortisha adams.

mac paintpots will do but i prefer too faced shadow insurance. also urban decay's primer potion.
