Desmoplastic Trichoepithelioma

May 23, 2011 by Dr.Deepak 2 Comments

Desmoplastic trichoepithelioma (DTE) is an uncommon benign adnexal tumor that usually present as flesh colored solitary, annular, indurated and centrally depressed papule or plaque on the face. Less commonly it might be localized on neck, upper trunk area and scalp. With an incidence of 1 in 5000 skin biopsies in adults, it is reported more commonly in women.

Several studies reports it as having slow growth pattern, however, few studies have been reported with aggressive growth pattern of DTE. Research suggests that there is no association with family history of similar disease and patients may not have any associated symptoms.

Desmoplastic trichoepithelioma (DTE) is benign tumor. Though benign in nature, these tumors can penetrate widely and have aggressive histological features. If correctly diagnosed, the lesion can safely be managed. Currently accepted treatment options for Desmoplastic trichoepithelioma are surgical removal, electrodessication and curettage. The recurrence rate of the treated lesion or new lesion is rare.
