Bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease or gingivitis. The cause is bacterial plaque. This is a substance left around the gum line when missed during brushing. Plaque is a product of bacteria, sugar and mucin, a protein in the saliva. It is the cause cavities when the bacteria produce acid or gum disease when the bacteria may produce toxins

Plaque hardens into calculus. This calcified plaque acts as a further irritant to the gum tissue, like a splinter under the finger nail only painless. At this stage the problem is totally reversible.

Proper brush and flossing should eliminate the problem but you need to have the teeth scaled and cleaned in a dental office to remove any calculus build up. This would continue to irritate the gums.

Left unchecked this process affects the underlying bone. This is periodontal disease (periodontitis) more commonly know as pyorrhea. Given time, otherwise perfectly normal teeth will loosen and be lost from lack of bone support.
