Hi I am 26 years old and I work as a volunteer in a reputed organisation. Due to my work, I have to do a lot of field visits. I use sunscreen lotion with SPF 30 and still my arms and face get dark. Is there something I can do at home to remove tan and bring back it back to its normal colour?

Dear Irashmi, Firstly, I would advise you to go for a higher SPF rather than 30. To get rid of tan lines and streaks, try and take frequent warm baths and exfoliate the problem areas. Be gentle as continual focus on an area can irritate the skin and you will just end up with another problem on your hands. Lotions containing alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) can reduce the severity of streaks if used frequently. Also the best thing would be to use Vitamin C oils which you can get in beauty salons.

Effects of sunburn could also be prevented by this home remedy:
Mix 1 tsp potato juice, in a tsp of lemon juice and apply it on affected area. Leave on for 15 minutes. Wash off. Repeat the process once a day till you get rid of the sun tan.

Do you choose your sunscreen according to your skin type Irashmi? It is very important. So, for oily or combination skin you need light & water based as it protects your skin without playing havoc with your oil glands, for dry skin type pick up the lotion formula and for sensitive type go for gentle sunscreen but alcohol free. Normal skin tends to tan easily. So, choose a light, non-greasy lotion with TPI 70.

As for home remedy you can try mixture of olive oil and brewed tea decoction. Tannic acid in the tea is good for fighting tan.

Irashmi, I know this probably sounds obvious but is it possible for you to cover up more when you're outside? A long sleeved shirt and wide brimmed hat may shield you from the worst of it. Combining that with the high SPF already mentioned may be enough. Even if you could do so at the hottest hours of the day for a few hours it could help.

Of course not knowing your line of work I don't know if that type of clothing would be practical or allowed.

Try rubbing Lemon juice mixed with Aloe Vera and some Vitamin E on the tanned area of your skin.
Another remedy is rubbing insides of the watermelon over tanned skin is also effective.
