I would like to ask why some people do have a sensitive skin when they start wearing jewelries. There was no rushes on my part when I started using my favorite floral designed rings but my friend started to itch when she wears a very expensive necklace. Why?

hi gresselda ! many people are allerigic to different types of substances including metals, leather, nickle etc ,me too allergic to some metals.it all depends upon individual body types and their genetic constitution.simple substances to which normal people are tolerant ,sensitive body even produce reaction to it ,because their immune system treat is as foreign and tend to generate response to it. the first time they come in contact with the substance body is already sensitized producing different types of immune cells and the second time they come in contact with same thing, body generates bigger response with all these immune cells acting against it and we happen to see it as allergy.

It is because of less immunity and high sensitivity towards allergen so people get allergic.

yes mck123 you can say its due to high sensitivity i guess, but not exactly due to low immunity, is just everybody is different and reacts to different things differently.its good u are not allergic those beautiful jewelries ,and lucky to be able to enjoy those things.

I can only wear pure gold, silver, etc. If I wear anything cheap or plated then I go green. :(

hi nikki! if the sensitivity is really disturbing ,we can try a course of treatment method named desensitisation therapy usually done in hospital for allergic rhinitis and other allergic diseases.it really works to some, but i dont know about 100% effectiveness.

Thank you I've never heard of that. The only problem I feel it causes me is the green colour. I learnt that back in my teens (I'm 40 now) so I have leant to avoid anything that isn't pure gold, silver, etc. I can wear loose items like watches but not anything that is too close to the skin, like a ring, for more than a day or two. I do have some costume pieces of jewellery but these get removed at night and I keep on my real pieces.

I have a really close friend who can not even wear real jewelery either, she gets red rashes even worse with the fake ones! She is basically allergic to all jewelry:(

As pure silver and gold are too soft to make jewellery with they are mixed with other metals.
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver (92.5%) and copper (7.5%) and gold, depending on carat has additional alloy elements, copper, silver, nickel, palladium and zinc.
You friend may have a reaction to the copper which is found in both which isn't unusual.
You can coat the part of metal that is in contact with the skin, with a top coat nail polish which forms a coating which stops the metal being in direct contact with the skin. But this would need reapplying as sensitivity returns.
