Darkness under eye circles is caused by stress due to lack of sleep. This becomes prominent under eye because the whole body becomes pale when you get stress.

I know that many of us have this problem and it is caused due to several reasons not only lack of sleep. Some of the reasons which i know are: Lack of Vitamins, More stress for eye (i.e. being in computer for longer than 8 hours daily). Besides, mental tension also can be the reason for it.
Yeah computer eye strain does it for me. Sleep will help and again healthy eating is important to always look and feel healthy.

Lack of sleep does it for me. If I get a good nights sleep my eyes are awesome in the morning but when I don't, well, they don't look so good. :(

dark circles could also be hereditary. there are creams and stuff advertized to help but that doesn't mean they work. eat right, get enough sleep, and then see how it goes.

You all pretty much hit the nail on the head, as we say. Sleep, BUT GOOD SLEEP, is important. Moisturizers under the eyes helps a lot also, something that has the tendency to tighten up the skin. Remember, whatevery you eat has a way of finding itself in the skin. Take garlic, eat a lot of garlic and your skin will start to smell a little, not a lot. Eat a lot of carrots or drink carrot juice and your skin will start to turn a little orange.
Also, your skin is like a sponge, it absorbs whatever is on it over a period of time.
The skin is the first thing we see, facial skin, arm skin, leg skin or feet skin. I always notice the facial skin and the feet skin, if one is wearing sandles. I also notice peoples elbows, hard and crusty elbows, they don't take good care of their skin, as a whole....
I think sleep is a big factor though, because I use to work night shift three nights straight and I would come home and look like I had been clobbered in the eyes:). Is it possible to get rid of the dark circles completely though?? I still have them but they are not as bad as before

Sometime this may cause of not having proper and healthy diet. Every body is willing to reduce weight today. So that they start starving them self. All this become the reason of other problems.

Your shiners, your raccoon eyes, your blue luggage... whatever you call your dark under-eye circles, here's what they really are: oxidizing hemoglobin.
Dark under-eye circles begin in the capillaries, the tiny blood vessels that web the delicate skin around the eyes. Now, your capillaries are so small that red blood cells sometimes have to line up, single file, to get through. Frequently, red blood cells get lost and wander into the surrounding skin. This isn't a problem - it happens all the time - and your body has a mechanism to mop up these escapees. Enzymes in your body break down the red blood cells, including their hemoglobin (the molecule that gives them their distinctive red color).
No problem, right? Except for one thing: when hemoglobin is broken down, its remaining components have a dark blue-black color. Just like a bruise. So your dark under-eye circles are actually caused by leaky capillaries.
How dark under-eye circles are like bruises
When something hits you, blood vessels are traumatized and sometimes broken. Blood leaks out into the surrounding skin. Your body begins the mopping-up process, and you see a dark, purplish or blue-black discoloration.
So, as you can see, dark under-eye circles are very similar to bruises. The same mechanisms produce them.

Here are some of the most common causes of true under-eye circles.
Allergies
Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
Heredity — dark under-eye circles can run in families
Lifestyle factors, such as physical or emotional stress, smoking, or chronic alcohol use can take a toll on your appearance
Nasal congestion (which can dilate and darken the veins that drain from your eyes to your nose)
Pigmentation irregularities — these are a particular concern for people of color, especially blacks and Asians
Rubbing or scratching your eyes
Sun exposure, which prompts your body to produce more melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color
Thinning skin and loss of fat and collagen — common as you age — can make the reddish-blue blood vessels under your eyes more obvious

For quick circle camouflage, apply eye cream and let it dry for a few minutes. Then pat on a creamy concealer that matches your skin tone. Top with a layer of loose powder, which helps prevent makeup from caking in creases.

Most common causes of dark circles :
Heredity: Dark circles under the eyes can be an inherited trait. If you have dark circles, then it is likely that other members of your family have dark circles too. The skin under the eye is very thin. When blood flows through veins close to surface of the skin it can produce a bluish tint. If your skin is transparent then the darker the circles will be. Transparent skin is also a inherited trait.
Exposure to Sun: Exposure to sun especially during the summer months can make the skin under the eyes look darker. This is true for dark skinned people as well. Suntans are caused by an increase in the natural pigmentation of the skin, as a result of exposure to the sun. This increase in pigmentation is drawn to the surface. This applies to the skin under the eyes as well.
Allergies and Eczema: Any infection of the eye that leads to itching can contribute to dark circles as rubbing and scratching the eyes darkens the skin. People who suffer from hay fever will notice that dark circles appear when the allergy is at its height. Certain food allergies can cause dark circles too.
Nutrition: An improper diet, an unbalanced diet or lack of a nutritious diet can cause dark circles under the eye.
Tiredness and Lack of Sleep: A lack of sleep or excessive tiredness can cause the skin under the eyes to become pale, thus, making the blood flowing under it visible.
Pregnancy and Menstruation: During pregnancy and menstruation the skin becomes pale and the veins under the skin become visible.
Age: As you grow older there are greater chances that you will have dark circles and they may become more prominent and permanent. If there are too many folds in the skin under the eyes, it will make the dark circles more prominent.

I'm not sure about any products but the best thing I find is to cut thin slices of cucumber and pop them into the freezer for a few minutes. Cold tea bags help the puffiness. Hope that helps.

The best way to get rid of dark circles is by going for a good deep sleep. You can mix a few drops of essential oil with carrier oils and apply it to your skin regularly. Oils like rose, sandalwood along with almond oil is a great combination to treat dark circles. This will also help you to reduce wrinkles.

Oh those dark under eye circles. The skin around our eyes is so thin and delicate, we have to nourish and protect it. I have found that my Eye Cream and Eye Serum have significantly the appearance of my under eye bags. I swear by this stuff.
