For those who travel extensively, hair gets dirty easily and requires everyday washing. The general belief is that everyday shampooing may result in excessive hair fall and cause hair to become rough and dry. I disagree with this myth. I feel if a mild shampoo is used, everyday washing is no hassle at all.

:(sadly, shampooing everyday leads to dry and dull hair because shampoos contain surfactants that strips hair off its natural lipids. but if you have an active lifestyle, you really need to wash your hair everyday. the trick is to use conditioners after every shampoo. if you don't feel like using conditioners, you really need to skip the shampoo every other day.

Those oils are completely natural. They are actually good for your hair.
Did you know that in the 40s/50s they would go to the parlor to get their hair done in those fabulously perfect curls only once a week....they would only wash their hair once a week, right before they went to the parlor to get their hair done again!
Think of it this way....your body produces those oils. And the more you wash them away....the more heavy and faster your body works to keep pumping out the oil.
So in a way...when we wash out hair everyday...we keep our hair working in hyper-drive to keep up with the oil production.
So...yes it is not good to wash it everyday.
I would suggest going at least every other day. Give your head a chance to breathe.
And yeah s said above using a Conditioner after every wash make the hair soft and protects it.

I wash my hair everyday and though I have a lot of falling hair, my hair is soft and healthy. I've even had it colored and straightened, but it's as gorgeous as ever. So it's just the hairfall that I have to deal with from time to time. Hair fall prevention shampoos work but to a small degree only. :(

Shampooing the hairs everyday is harmful. Its better to just rinse the hairs with regular water and wash with shampoo every alternate day.If you travel a lot and your hairs get dirty then you can take cap while traveling so that dust going into your hair is reduced and use less oil as it makes the dust to stick to our hairs.

Wow, I didn't know that washing hair everyday causes your hair to fall out! I tend to wash every day or every other day. I had a lot of hair loss when I was washing everyday and now I have thousands (well, seems like thousands) of short little new growth poking out everywhere.
I went to shampooing every other day because my eczema was acting up. Maybe that is why my hair has started to grow back in!

I don't think shampooing hair is harmful. But hair fall occurs by excessively blow drying it every single day. Shampoos are generally mild and not the harsh chemical concoctions they are made out to be. Also if a conditioner is used there should be no problem. However wet hair is very fragile and must be handled carefully.

I remember when I was in the 6th grade, I would try and wash my hair every single day. My hair would get so dry it would feel like I was touching straw. I guess by washing my hair I was also washing away the necessary oils that my scalp produced ,therefore I was left with really dry hair, but I'm okay now. People do not do this!

Everyday hair washing is not good for the health of your hair. You should give a day's break at least between each shampoo.

If you wash your hair everyday with a strong shampoo - it is counter-productive. Strong shampoos harm more than they help. If you are a habitual daily hair-wash person - then shampoo with a very mild shampoo.

i have been washing my hair daily or every other day for 55 years. my hair is now almost to my waist. i just cut about 12 inches off of it. my hair is healthy, and shiney. i am getting gray and my natural color is not there anymore. it has been replaced by a mousy brown. i have half grey, silver and mousy brown but it shines and i get complements on it all the time. my hair has always been healthy. it went thru the 60's with the hi do's, teasing, and lots of cheap hair spray but since i washed it on a daily basis and used good inexpensive shampoos and conditioners it always looked healthy. maybe i was just lucky. i have oily hair. now i use sunsilk shampoo and conditioner.

No i never wash my hair everyday, for one i cant be bothered as it takes up so much time. I have really long, thick, curly hair so i can get away with washing it only once a week. When i leave my hair its so so much better to style!
Great post btw!

Besides the usual shampoo and the conditioner? I love coconut oil in my hair and now Im starting to really want to get rid of all the harsh chemicals I put in my hair when I wash. I was wondering if there are any other ways of washing hair.
Know any?

You can shampoo everyday but you have to do something to avoid it from being harsh to your hair. Put a little water together with your shampoo before putting it in your hair. A mild effect will follow. I suggest you to do this because we all use different products of shampoo and we are not sure if the shampoo is strong or mild so just to avoid hair loss why not do this.

Its bad to wash your hair everyday.. It strips your hair of nutrients essential for healthy hair.. You should condition it everyday while you take a shower and wash it every 2-3 days.. If you want to wash your hair daily then use mild shampoo.. Most experts agree that it's safe to wash hair daily with a mild shampoo..

Cleanliness is half faith. Its true to clean our body daily,in my opinion try using some herbal or coconut oil,or in winters few drops of olive oil on the head every alternate day and then shampoo, feels like cool head.

I also agree it is really very harmful our hair. You don't have to wash your hair every day is not fine. And no, sweat wouldn't be a natural oil. If you sweat a lot one day, wash your hair.
With my opinion i prefer to wash hairs daily with Shampoo...............Its better for hairs because dust is very harmful for our hairs.

# Do not pour or apply hair care products directly over scalp as this may clog the pores on your head.
# Wet your hair with normal tap water before you enter a swimming pool. This would prevent hair soak the chlorinated water of the pool. Wear swimming cap.
# Do not overuse hair dryer. Hot air can be damaging to your hair therefore select the cool setting when using a hair dryer. Do not blow dry one spot for longer period of time, keep moving the hair dryer. Maintain a good distance between device and hair.
# Use shampoos & conditioners that match your hair type. Trial and error is the best way to find out what specific hair product is best for your hair. Do a little research over the Internet. Check ingredients and other details before you decide to go for a hair care product. Natural hair care products are safe and effective.

I shampoo my hair everyday when I have my morning shower. I have done this all my life and I have very healthy hair as well. Like Brenda says in depends on your needs but there is nothing worse than hair that is not clean. It smells horrible.

Thanks for that hair tips drrenuka. In addition, always make sure that after you have took a bath you keep your hair dry . You can use an electric fan or a dryer to have it dry. keep it dry before going out. By simply doing these it makes your hair healthy and shiny.

Yes, I also agree with you Aliva ,I also think that hair should be washed daily as we travel and go out in the polluted areas our hair gets dirty and we think to wash hair but due to myth of hair problem we think that it makes hair dry and rough as i also done hair washing daily but due to this myth i now do alternate hair washing and i doesn't harm the hair more as compare to daily hair washing, so try this if you get benifted please reply to me

yes, we should all have a 'day off' from hair washing, I think.
But what I think is the main reason my hair gets damaged is that every time it is washed I use my hairdryer and use it for about 15-20 minutes, it takes a while to do my hair and I like it done properly, then I use my GHD's and straighten every bit.
But that's because my hair is naturally wavy and I think it makes me look about 5 years old, haha!

well lucy, i like wavy or curly hair. my daughter's hair is curly and so is one of my granddaughter's hair. my daughter loves hers. she used to wear hers down to her mid back but her hair is thin. her natural curl makes it look thicker. we cut it short and layered it and it just goes into beautiful curls. my granddaughter though is like you. she hates her curls, she is 15 and has been straightening her hair for years. her hair is thick and absolutely beautful when she allows the curls to dry. but she loves it straight.

Yeah I guess it's down to personal preferance, but I don't like my waves, I get them from my Mum and Grandad, Mum has such trouble with hers, bless her. Also I think it's down to media and friends that seem to promote straight sleek hair as fashionable and I was bought my GHD's as a present.

Stop wasting your life in front of the mirror fixing your hair day after day.Unless you have really oily hair, you should give hair and scalp a rest for at least a day between shampoos.
